The Institute for Families and Nannies (TIFFAN) is a San Francisco–based nonprofit that builds the supply of quality in‑home childcare through job training and pathways to higher education. Our programs help caregivers gain essential skills, create professional portfolios, and connect to better jobs while supporting children’s health, safety, and development.

WHO WE ARE

What in‑home childcare is

In‑home childcare is a model where caregivers provide personalized care in the child’s own home for one family or for a shared arrangement between two families in one or both homes. This model offers flexible scheduling, including non‑traditional hours and rotating schedules, tailored to each family’s unique needs, routines, and cultures, and is distinct from preschool or family childcare settings that serve larger groups of children.

Kind, patient and understanding

I cannot say enough good things about them and the care and thoughtfulness that was extended from the very first email and conversation. They listened and delivered in a huge way. I feel more supported in my parenting now than ever before.

Problem/impact

Across California and the United States, there is a persistent gap between the demand for childcare and the availability of preschool and family childcare openings, especially for infants and toddlers and during non‑traditional hours.  When families cannot find care in these settings, they rely on grandparents, aunties, neighbors, babysitters, and nannies.  Many parents leave the workforce altogether.

These in‑home caregivers are routinely left out of the training, education, and supports available to preschool teachers and family childcare providers.

How TIFFAN helps

TIFFAN’s mission is to build the supply of quality, affordable in-home childcare by training, certifying, and professionally supporting in-home childcare providers.  By combining comprehensive training, professional portfolio development, and pathways to higher education, TIFFAN creates a robust pipeline of trusted caregivers while educating parents on how to hire and work well with in-home providers.

Our programs are for people who love caring for children and want to provide safe, loving care for them in the parents’ home —whether you are a grandparent, relative, neighbor, babysitter, nanny, or student.
